More Chicago
All and all, I’m feeling pretty positive about this move. The city seems good, and it’s been real easy to get around. Carrying all my stuff with me has worn me out, though (I’ve had to carry everything twice–shifting between Gabe and Gavin’s and Kristina’s and vice versa).
I’ve been hanging around SAIC some–the library, student services, and the computer lab. I always thought that private schools would be so much more cushy than state schools, but that might not be the case. The macs and scanners here in the lab are looking kinda old. Perhaps it’s not fair to compare this to the IT Lab, where Quinn, Carlos, and Shane keep things super up to date.
The Flaxman Library was pretty comfortable to hang out in, and it looks like they have a good cooperative system going with other local libraries. The main branch of the Chicago Public Library is right down the street, as is the library of DePaul University (which looks like a much bigger school than I imagined).
Soon I will be meeting up with Joseph Grigely and a couple other Visual and Critical Studies students. Unfortunately, I am so tired I can barely hold my head up…not good for first impressions or dinner conversation.
Finally, I learned today that both Joseph and Maud Lavin (the head of VCS) have won Guggenheim Fellowships
